Alien 8

Alien 8

Ashby Computers and Graphics Ltd., Ultimate Play the Game

Alien 8 is an action-adventure video game developed and published by Ultimate Play The Game. It was released for the ZX Spectrum, BBC Micro, Amstrad CPC and MSX in 1985.[a] The game is a spiritual successor to the best-selling Knight Lore, which was lauded by critics for its isometric graphics. In the game, the player takes control of a robot, Alien 8, whose job is to ensure that all of the cryogenically frozen passengers on board a starship remain viable during the ship's voyage. The game was written by Chris Stamper, and graphics were designed by Tim Stamper. Alien 8 uses the same image masking technique as Knight Lore, which allows the developers to create composite structures out of stacked images without visual overlay. The technique was copyrighted by Ultimate as the Filmation game engine. As with its spiritual predecessor, the game is rendered isometric projection.[2] The game was critically acclaimed upon release. Reviewers praised the game's graphics and innovation, however minor criticism was directed at its similarities to Knight Lore.

Charlie the Chef keeps all the ingredients locked away in the pantry, only letting them out when he wants to cook them! Now this makes them jolly upset, let me tell you. So! As soon as they can, the ingredients dash out of the pantry dragging all the sorts of nasties, found in the bottom of drawers and cupboards, with them, to escape, and run wild. Poor old Charlie! He has to daze the ingredients with his flour bombs and knock them into the mixing bowl, because if they go into the dustbins they will be eaten by the bin monster, who doesn't care one little bit where he throws any rubbish. Should any rubbish or nasties get into the cake mix then the "ingredients needed" counter will change, and Charlie will have to work quicker and faster, if he's going to bake his cake.

The game is presented in a isometric format and is set on board a haunted galleon named the Blackwyche. Sir Arthur Pendragon's main objective is to free the soul of its former captain, Richard Cavendish. Pendragon can utilise various weapons such as knives, daggers and a magic sword to defend himself from enemy skeletons. The player begins the game with full energy and it will slightly deplete every time the player is hit by an enemy. If Pendragon completely runs out of energy, a large skeletal hand will drag the player off-screen, thus killing him. Various segments of maps are scattered around the galleon, which will form a complete view of the game's overworld once all the segments are picked up. Other scattered items in the game include keys for locked doors, gunpowder to fire cannons and pieces of jewellery, the latter having no additional use other than adding to the player's score.

In the dark reaches of the Amobeus Nebula stands the isolated series of stars and planets, the Beta Gamma System. But to those who have taken the Space, the Zebarema. A tightly bound cluster of planets and dark stars, totally unique in the Whole Universe, bound together by a lattice of Plasmic Energy, extending between one and all Planets in the System. Each Planet is composed of Anti-element Cybertron, it is the only known source in the whole universe and such is its value that many such civilisations have devoted their entire resources to prying off one of the smaller outer planets from the main cluster, in a futile bid to gain access to the untold wealth it would bring, once free from its Anti-elemental Nest. For once the Cybertron is free from the Antiplasmic Lattice, and becomes exposed to positive matter Space, it crystallises to form Cybernite the hardest substance in the known Universe, resistant to all forms of heat and energy, allowing the wielders to mine the greatest form of energy ever, the stars. For who can control the Zebarema, can control the Galaxy. But the Beta Gamma system "Zebarema" is reluctant to give up its Cybernite Crystals and exerts an almost unbeatable magnetronic pull on all matter trying to escape its protective envelope. Thus the undertaking of construction of an enormous carrier of the precious Cargo, the Crystal Ship. Many years and many lives have been spent on this vast Space Sailer and the time draws near, for the ship's destined function, for only the Superlative Power of one such vessel can resist the magnetronic pull exerted by the system on any leaving body. Dut to its immense size, the ship has been constructed in stages which have already been shipped out to the Zebarema System. These propulsion units are of little use elsewhere in the Galaxy and have been constructed solely for the use as escape Engines and Auxiliaries which obey the strange plysical laws particular to the Beta Gamma System.
