BadLands

BadLands

Steven Collins, Domark Software, Tengen

Badlands is effectively the spiritual successor to Atari's previous racing games Super Sprint and Championship Sprint. Similarly to the Sprint titles, Badlands pits three cars against each other in a three lap race around a small, single-screen circuit. Bonuses are present in the form of wrenches which can be traded for goods such as extra speed, extra acceleration or better tires Unlike the Sprint games, Badlands expands upon the formula, taking place in a post-apocalyptic environment and equipping each of the players with cannons. In reality, the cannons do little except to slow cars down by repeatedly shooting at them, but the shop between levels offers the possibility of arming the car with missiles which will destroy the target car, placing it at a severe disadvantage as a replacement is brought onto the track, taking a few seconds. The tracks also featured a number of new obstacles, including mines and retractable barricades.

Castle Master

Castle Master

Incentive Software, Domark Software, The Hit Squad

Initially the player chooses between playing as the prince or princess. The character not chosen is then taken away by a dragon to Castle Eternity. (The location of keys and some other items differ slightly between the two characters.) The game requires the player, through a first person view, to explore Castle Eternity. There are riddles on many of the castle walls, which give gameplay hints. There are also keys and pentacles hidden in various locations for the player to collect. Many rooms contain spirits which attack the player and reduce his or her health. The player's health (represented by a barbell where weights indicate the amount) is also the player's strength which is important for some puzzles. The player's only weapon is an unlimited supply of rocks to throw, but a single hit is sufficient to exorcise most of the spirits. The ultimate goal is to kill the boss spirit Magister (who can only be killed when all other spirits in the castle are destroyed) and thereby rescue the character's opposite number. There are no lives for the player; if health is reduced to nothing the game is restarted from the beginning unless the player loads a saved game. The game was ranked the 39th best game for the Commodore Amiga in Issue 0 of Amiga Power (May 1991). It did not feature in any further Top 100 listings. A budget re-release was reviewed by Linda Barker in Issue 17 (September 1992) receiving a 70% score

Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

Atari Games, Atari, Domark Software

The Return of the Jedi completes the Trilogy of games based on the Star Wars films. Each one is a conversion of the Arcade game and Return of the Jedi picks up the action of the movie where the rebel forces begin their attack against the Imperial Death Star. In the first lever you control Princess Leia on her Speederbike through the forest of Endor to safety of the Ewok village. You leave Leia there and go to another part of the forest to control Chewbacca's Scout Walker. There, Hans Solo is waiting to deactivate the shields protecting the Death Star. On the second and third levels, you control Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian as he flies the Millennium Falcon. Lando flies close to the Death Star fighting off a mighty attack from the T.I.E. fighters. The Millennium Falcon enters the Death Star and travels down a dangerous tube towards the central reactor. James Bond 007: The Duel

James Bond 007: The Duel

Domark Software, Tec Toy

The Duel is a James Bond video game released for the Sega Master System, the Sega Game Gear, and the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis. The game was developed and published by Domark and released in 1993. Armed with a pistol, the player controls James Bond through various side-scrolling enemy bases to rescue female hostages and arm a bomb placed at a strategic point to destroy the base. Along the way, Bond must battle numerous thugs and familiar bosses. The game is notable among Bond games for a number of reasons. Although it was released 4 years after Timothy Dalton's last outing as James Bond, his likeness is used in the game, most notably the opening screens, thus making it Dalton's last appearance in a Bond game to date. It was also the final Bond game to be released by Domark. It was also the first Bond game not to be directly based on a movie or novel. Instead it featured an original storyline, albeit one featuring familiar villains including Jaws and Oddjob. Though the game's storyline was not its strong point, it did blaze a trail for future licence-holders EA, half of whose Bond output would be based on original storylines. One previous Bond game, Operation Stealth, included an original storyline but the game was originally based on a generic Bond-style character named John Glames and only had the licence added for its North American release.
